What really happened the night Ichabod disappeared? We wrote our own confessions for each character.
Brom:
When I saw that good-for-nothing fool, Ichabod, dancing with my Katrina I, became instantly jealous. It was at the big party of Old Baltus Van Tassel where the two danced around the room joyously as could be. This was not the way things were supposed to happen… I was supposed to be the one Katrina fell in love with, not him. Something had to be done.
Katrina:
After Brom told me at the party that Ichabod did not love me and was only interested in my inheritance, I was devastated. It felt as if I had opened my heart to Ichabod and he put a knife through it. So naturally, when Ichabod proposed to me, I said no fearing that what Brom said was true. I had wanted to ask the advice of my mother, for she surely would have known what to do. I loved Ichabod, but how was I to be sure he didn't love me only for my money?
* Vernik:
I am Brom's right hand man; whatever Brom does, I'm always there to back him up. It was on the night of Old Baltus Van Tassel's party that I felt Brom did something cruel and unforgivable. It was on that very night that Brom did something more than play a joke on someone or make an outrageous bet. No, on that very night, what Brom did was break apart two people who loved each other unconditionally.
*Hieden
Brom had given me the job of finding a pumpkin and a cloak big enough to cover my entire body and head. Because Brom had given me this task, I was thrilled. Brom was so well respected, every boy aspired to be like him. He was my role model. I left the party to go searching for the cloak, and when I found it, I came back inside the house to find Brom and his gang waiting for me. They told me to stay behind and not to follow them into the forest. I was a curious boy, so I waited till after they left and followed them as quietly as possible.
I was just getting into the forest when I heard someone call my name. I was terrified that someone in Brom's gang had caught me. They started to laugh, and it was then I realized it wasn't someone in Brom's gang who had caught me but a girl who I had gone to school with. She said “Hieden, you silly boy, what are you doing?”
*Micasalla
I was at Old Baltus Van Tassel's party when it had gotten too stuffy inside, so I went for a walk. I was walking along the edge of the forest when I saw someone creeping about the bushes. I recognized the boy to be an old playmate named Hieden. I called his name and he froze with panic. He told me that Brom and his gang were doing something, and he wanted to follow them and find out. I, of course, being somewhat of a tomboy always looking for adventure, told him I was coming along. At first he seemed resistant, but after he realized I was a head taller and mighty strong, he said I could come along. Hieden told me that I could come along, but if I got hurt I wouldn't go running and crying to my mommy.
And so the two of us ventured into the forest, following the drunken voices of Brom's gang. When we saw Brom get on his horse and drape a cape over his entire body, and when he turned around, we saw that he was carrying a pumpkin. We thought, what on earth are they up to now? As we heard a second horse quietly trot through the forest, we knew Brom would give them trouble. As the second horse came closer and closer, we heard the man riding it singing. He sounded just like Ichabod Crane, the schoolteacher.
*Vernik
After Brom dressed himself up like the Headless Horseman, he stood in the middle of the road and waited for Ichabod to come near. When Ichabod came near, he called out. He sounded petrified. Brom did not say a word but began to race his horse with Ichabod's. The gang jumped into a carriage and quietly followed behind them. Ichabod was so scared he didn't even notice us trailing behind him. As Brom and Ichabod reached the bridge, Ichabod's horse seem to get tired, and he stumbled over, falling down the hill. Ichabod tried to get up, but his legs were all twisted up with the horse. Brom turned his horse sideways, and his horse stood up on his two back legs. Ichabod lay paralyzed on the ground as Brom threw the pumpkin at him. When the pumpkin hit Ichabod's head, Ichabod's big, staring eyes slowly closed. Brom ripped of his cape and gave a hearty laugh. We all stood there laughing as we waited for Ichabod to get up, but he did not move. I, being the most sober of us all, went down to have a look. When I got down to the bottom of the hill where Ichabod lay, I saw that Ichabod's leg was mangled up and he was knocked out cold. Ichabod was dead. Not knowing what to do, we untangled him from the horse and carried him over to a giant tree.

Me and Micasalla ran through the forest following Brom's gang, but we could not keep up. Soon we got lost in the forest and did not know what to do. Micasalla was starting to get very worried. We started to hear some crying, it sounded like an animal had gotten caught in a trap. Micasalla had a soft side for animals and demanded that we begin a search to find it. Using the light from the very small lantern we brought, we looked around for a crying animal. When Micasalla sat down and started crying that we were lost, I got really mad; hadn't I told her to stay behind? In anger, I kicked a log as hard as I could, and the most surprising thing happened--the log yelped out in pain! I looked closer and saw that what I had kicked was not a long at all, it was Ichabod Crane! Ichabod beckoned me closer, and I came. He whispered into my ear. He said, “Help me young lad. Help me up!” Me and Micasalla managed to drag him out of the forest. He looked terrible, his leg looked as if it was bleeding gallons, and he was as pale as a ghost. We called for a doctor, and the doctor told us that he was seriously hurt, and that he would have to take him to the nearest hospital right away.
So we helped the doctor get Ichabod into the carriage, and they were about to leave when Ichabod told the doctor he would need a private word with me and Micasalla.

After we had gotten lost in the forest and found Ichabod bleeding everywhere, we managed to find our way out of the forest, dragging Ichabod with us. I, of course, ended up having to do most of the dragging. When we got Ichabod out of the forest, Hieden said he was going to run and get a doctor for Ichabod. I protested and whined and finally he said he would let me do it. He probably just gave in because he was so tired from dragging Ichabod, even though I was the one doing most of the dragging.
Anyways, the doctor and I traveled back to the edge of the forest where Ichabod and Hieden were in a carriage. When the doctor saw what bad shape Ichabod was in, he told us that he was going to take Ichabod to the nearest hospital. Before Ichabod and the doctor left for the hospital, Ichabod called us into the carriage where he lay. Ichabod made us promise never to speak a word of this to anyone. For Ichabod was a very superstitious person, and he believed that he had just had an encounter with a ghost, which meant that he must leave the town immediately, without anyone with an evil heart knowing, or he would die. The more Ichabod described the “ghost” that he had seen, the more everything seemed to make sense. Brom had dressed up in the cloak we saw him putting on, had scared Ichabod, and threw a pumpkin at him, scaring his horse away and knocking him out cold. Me and Hieden tried to explain to Ichabod that he had not actually seen a ghost, and that he had been fooled by Brom Bones. But Ichabod would not listen. He kept saying that if only we had heard the way he snarled, and saw his vicious eyes, that we would have known it was a ghost. Ichabod grabbed onto our shoulders and began shaking violently. He told us that if we told anyone, we would die too. I am not a superstitious person, but the look on Ichabod's face was enough to scare me into doing anything.
*Hieden
After the doctor took Ichabod away to the hospital, me and Micasalla just stood there for a second, letting what had just happened sink in. I was the first one to speak, I asked her if she was ok. She told me that she was ok if I was ok. Now what kind of answer is that? I had asked her a simple kind-hearted question and she gave me one of her sarcastic feminine rights answer. Oh right, back to the story, as we walked home we went for a quick dip in the river to get some blood off ourselves. We promised to each other that we would never tell what we saw, just in case what Ichabod had said was true.

The morning after the party, I awoke with a startling headache. The night before I had cried myself to sleep, worried about turning down Ichabod. After all, Brom was known for his practical jokes. What if Brom was playing a joke on me when he told me Ichabod only wanted my money? By the afternoon of the next day, the whole town was aware that Ichabod was missing. It was said that he was taken by an evil spirit.
I soon got married to Brom, and we are happy some of the time, but deep in my mind no matter what I do, I will always wonder how my life could've been if I had said yes to Ichabod on that night
