Cancun is located along the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It is made of a mainland city and the island resort which is nearby, connected by bridges. The island is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist resorts, with a nickname the “hotel zone” because of the many hotels, convention centers, malls, restaurants and clubs. Over 2 million people visit each year, because of the city’s warm, sunny climate and beautiful white sandy beaches.

Surprisingly, Cancun was very poor and not well populated until the late 1960’s, when the government tried to increase tourism by building a new resort. By 1974 the tourist industry for Cancun was booming, and has been since then.

It is a very popular place for people to go on their honeymoons.  College kids enjoy going to Cancun during their Spring break from school.
