Bread of the Dead

One of the most important festivals in Mexico is the Dia de muertos, which means the Day of the Dead.

This festival is held November 2. The day of the dead combines Aztec traditions with the celebrations of the Spanish Roman Catholic who settled in Mexico during the 1500s.

 

Ingredients Utensils

2 cups(500 ml) plain flour        

2 tablespoons (30 ml) butter, softened

2 eggs

1/3 cups (75ml) of sugar

pinch of salt

2 tablespoons (30ml) grated orange zest (the peel)

1 cup (250 ml) olive juice

1/3 cup (75 ml) icing sugar

slotted spoon

 

 

 

 

Steps

1. Sift the flour into a bowl.          

2. Add the eggs and orange zest to the bowl.

3. Stir the ingredients together with a woodenspoon.

4. Knead the dough with your hands until it is smooth and elastic.

5. Cover the dough with clean cloth for 30 minutes.

6. Afterward, roll the dough into thin sheets and cut it into rectangular strips. Tie some of the strips into loose knots.

7. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and fry the strips a few at a time until golden brown.

8. Remove the fried strips with a slotted spoon and place on paper towel.             

9. Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.
