Computer

During the 1940s, many advanced were made in the computer technology. These advancements allowed computers to be able to function in the war effort.

The computers were first developed at Harvard University. The computer was called Mark 1. Mark 1 was about 55 feet in length and 8 feet in height with about 760,000 parts and 500 miles of wire. The Mark 1 computer could add, subtract, multiply, divide and have other mathematical functions such as trigonometry. This computer is controlled by an electric motor and programmed by punch cards. This five ton machine could do a multiplication problem in about six seconds. Mark 1 was later replaced by Mark 2 in 1948.

Mark 1 was one of the most important inventions in our history. Who would have thought that this complicated device would turn into something that every American will use in their everyday life?
