During the later Republic and Early Empire the craving for a good education was probably more prevalent than in any other age, barring the present. Even the lower classes were not usually illiterate (witness the numerous wall scrabbling at Pompeii), although there was no system of free public schools.

Reading:
As part of their education, young boys were taught to be effective speakers. The father of the household taught his son how to read at home. In the Roman school they read scrolls and books.
Writing:

Roman Tablets
The father also taught his son how to write as well as read. They also learned that in the Roman schools. When the Roman boy was 7 - 11 he learned basic writing.

Sewing and Weaving:

Girls were much different in education than boys. Boys were the ones who learned to read and write. the girls however learned to sew. Sewing was one of the main thing girls did all day.
Girls as stated earlier did different educational things than boys. Another main thing a girl did was weave. Mothers were the ones who taught weaving top their daughters. This like the boys reading was done at home.
