The swirling sound of whistles, cars honking, and shouts accompany people as they walk down the streets of Manhattan. Yet many of them do not know of the fascinating history and facts hidden behind each signpost. Manhattan is comprised of many significant streets that draw people toward the amazing sites, incredible architecture, and towering skyscrapers located in the borough.       

Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue are major shopping districts; their sidewalks are always teeming with people visiting the many exclusive and extraordinary venues. In addition to the popular stores, museums and brownstone mansions line these streets. In the center of the hustle and bustle is the famous Central Park on Fifth Avenue.       

Broadway and 42nd Street are famous for their award winning performances and historical theaters. They are both plentiful in the performing arts and home to many interesting events of the past.       

Canal Street and Mulberry Street are proud cultural areas. Little Italy, on Mulberry Street, houses magnificent bakeries, pizzerias, and Italian food stores. Chinatown, located on both streets, is a hectic place filled with the numerous delights of Chinese culture.

Wall Street runs perpendicular to the Hudson River and the East River. Today it is a thriving center of business and finance. It has made a startling transformation from a murky marshland to a canyon of stone and steel.

These streets, all different, yet essential in their own way, have something in common. Behind the museums, stores, and tourist sites, there lies an amazing history. It is the past, the lessons learned, and the experiences that have made each street what it is today.
