Franklin Pierce was the
son of Benjamin Pierce. Benjamin Pierce was a well known hero of
the
Revolutionary War. Franklin Pierce admired his father so much
that he
dreamed to be just like him. His mother didn't want Franklin to
be a
soldier. She wanted her son to study and graduate from college.
Franklin did study and graduated from college in 1824. After his
graduation, he entered the Army and he got his chance in the war with
Mexico.
In 1834, he married Jane Means Appleton.
Franklin Pierce was voted into the House of Representative
and then into the Senate. In 1852, Franklin was elected president
without
giving speeches or campaigning for the presidency. Most people
from the south elected him to be the president because he was "soft" on
the slavery issue.
Franklin Pierce struggled with the slavery
issue. It was under his administration that people in the
Kansas and Nebraska Territories determined if they were to be slave
free
or not. It was also under his administration that our nation purchased
the Gadsden Strip from Mexico, presently known as the southern part of
Arizona and the southwestern part of New Mexico. President Pierce
retired to his New Hampshire home and died on October 8, 1869.
