James Buchanan was born in April 23, 1791 in a Cove Gap.   He was the son of James and Elizabeth Spear Buchanan.  He was born to a rich family. He was the first boy, but the second of 11 kids. His nickname was Old Buck because his name was Buchanan.  He studied Greek, Latin, arithmetic and book keeping. His father owned a store between two mountains which every traveler had to pass to get out of  the town.  He got a lot of money so that's how Buchanan’s family became wealthy.

James Buchanan graduated from Dickinson College in 1809.   In 1813, he was admitted to the Lancaster County.  He was happy to practice law.  In 1819, he asked Anna Coleman to marry him, but her family didn't like him.  Anna's family opposed to the marriage and they never got married.  James Buchanan was announced as president in 1857.  He was the first president who did not have a wife.  Because of this, his niece Harriet Lane took the place of the First Lady.   During his administration, the Confederate States of America declared their independence.
