James Abram
Garfield was born on November 19, 1831 in Orange Township which is now
More land, Ohio. Even as a infant, his childhood was
difficult.
His father died when he was only a year old so Garfield
grew up being cared by his mother and an uncle. While he was at
Orange Township, Garfield attended school in Orange City Schools
and from Western Reserve Eclectic Institute which was later re-named
Hiram College. Garfield then transferred to Williams College in
Williamstown, Massachusetts, where he was a brother of the Delta
Uphilson. James Garfield graduated as marvelous student who
enjoyed all subjects, except chemistry. Everybody loved him so
much at
both schools that at the Eclectic Institute, they offered him a job as
a
teacher.
While
he was a
teacher at the Institute, Garfield became so successful that he went on
to be the principal of the college. While working, Garfield fell in
love with one of his students, Lucretia Rudolph. They were married and
had two girls and five boys. Garfield quit his job at the Institute and
was enlisted in what he thought was something more practical. So at the
beginning of the Civil War, James Abram Garfield was enlisted in the
Union Army. He commanded the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, but that
didn't last. He went back into politics. In 1876 while Garfield was a
Republican member of Ohio Legislature. U.S. Democrat of that
time, Allen
Granberry Thurman's, term had ended. The Ohio Legislature chose
Garfield to take his place. That's when people encouraged him to run
for president. Garfield won with a seeping victory. But tragedy had to
strike. Garfield was assassinated by Charles Julius Guiteau.
Doctors tried to find the bullet, but it was too late. James Garfield
was pronounced dead on July 2nd 1881.
