Millard Fillmore was the son of Nathaniel and Phoebe Fillmore.  Fillmore's family was not wealthy.  He belonged to a family where most of their income came from their farming.  Millard Fillmore helped his father where he worked as a cloth maker in order to help his family financially.  Fillmore was unable to go to school as a young child because his family couldn't afford it.  Fillmore taught himself to read by reading every book that was in his way.  He finally was able to attended school at the age of 18.   His teacher, Abigail Powers, was only two years older than him. She encouraged him to be the best of the best.

Millard Fillmore was able to study law.  In 1823, he was admitted to the bar to be a lawyer.  Fillmore received a clerkship with a local judge and had a stable job.  In 1826, Fillmore married Abigail Powers. They lived in NY, where he served in the New York State Assembly and later in the U.S. House of Representatives.   When President Zachary Taylor died, Vice President Millard Fillmore assumed the duties of the presidency on November 2, 1852.
Franklin Pierce was elected President of the United States with William R. King as his vice president.  During his administration, he authorized Matthew Perry's trip to Japan which helped open up trade with that country.  He also signed the Compromise of 1850 which allowed California to be part of the Union as a free state.
