Zachary Taylor was born in Virginia in 1784.  He was the son of Col. Taylor a distinguished soldier of the Revolution War.   He grew up on a plantation located in Kentucky.   His family was wealthy. They owned about 10,000 acres in Kentucky and they also owned slaves.  As he got older, he join the military.   He became an officer in the Army.  Zachary Taylor spent a lot of years guarding the frontiers against Indians.  Being part of the Army made him a strong nationalist and a war hero.

Zachary Taylor served in the Mexican American War and the War of 1812.  He was the only president to serve in both of these wars.  Can you believe he spent more than 40 agonizing years in the military trying to become a major general.  He made his home in Rouge, Louisiana and owned a plantation with 100 slaves in Mississippi.  He married Margaret Mackall Smith on June 21, 1810.  They had 6 children.  Margaret loved Zachary Taylor so much that she vowed not to go into society if he didn't return save and sound from the Mexican Wars.  She made a promise to God, that if he protected her husband when he was fulfilling his military duties she will not take the role of the First Lady.  When he returned form the war, his daughter was given the role of first lady.  Zachary Taylor contribute to the Mexican American war by being in command and winning the battles.  He was also well known for his desire to admit the state of California to the United States.
