Zachary Taylor was born in Virginia in
1784. He was the son of
Col. Taylor a distinguished soldier of the Revolution War. He
grew up
on a plantation located in Kentucky. His family was
wealthy. They owned about 10,000 acres in Kentucky and they also owned
slaves. As he got older, he join the military. He
became an officer in the Army. Zachary Taylor spent a lot of
years guarding the frontiers against Indians. Being part of the
Army made him a strong nationalist and a war hero.
Zachary Taylor served in the Mexican American War and the War of
1812. He was the only
president to serve in both of these wars. Can you believe he
spent more
than 40 agonizing years in the military trying to become a major
general. He made his home in Rouge, Louisiana and owned a
plantation with 100 slaves in Mississippi. He married Margaret
Mackall Smith on June 21, 1810. They had 6 children.
Margaret loved Zachary Taylor so much that she vowed not to go into
society if he didn't return save and sound from the Mexican Wars.
She made a promise to God, that if he protected her husband when he
was fulfilling his military duties she will not take the role of the
First Lady. When
he returned form the war, his daughter was given the role of first
lady. Zachary Taylor contribute to the Mexican American war by
being in command and winning the battles. He was also well known
for his desire to admit the state of California to the United
States.
