Chichen Itza was the most powerful city of the Mayan Indians between 900 A.D. and 1200 A.D in what
is now Mexico. It was built in the Yucatan. It controlled the most important trade routes. Chichen Itza linked Yucatan with central Mexico. The Chichen Itza replaced another Mayan city called Tikal. Chichen Itza began
weakening in the 1000 or 1100 as the Mayan civilization became more competitive. The Mayan built a huge
plaza at the center of the Chichen. Chichen Itza has its designs made from heavy objects. They built a tall
limestone pyramid with a temple on top. The temple Castillo was dedicated to a serpent god named Quetzalcoatl. Chichen Itza also had other parts. It had the temple of the warriors, a ball court, an and a public steam bath. Astronomers also studied the skies from an observatory.

In 2007, it was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World!
