......The Taj Mahal is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. It was built in India beginning in 1634. Taj Mahal means Crown Palace. Though it looks like a palace, it is actually a mausoleum or burial tomb. People believe that this mausoleum cost up to 35 million rupees to build, which is about one million dollars in American money! The Taj Mahal is made of white marble in India. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build the Taj Mahal. It was built in front of the Jamuna River located in India. The Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife when she died. Some people think that the Taj Mahal was designed by Geronimo Veroneo, an Italian architect. When the emperor died in 1666, they buried him next to her. This wonder is the most visited place in India making it one of the most important tourist attractions in the world. It was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2007!
