Machu Picchu is an Incan site located in the Andes mountains. The ruins of this site are of 200 buildings
built in the 1400’s by an Incan ruler. It was most likely a royal estate or religious retreat. Machu Picchu
means “old peak”. The buildings were built of granite stones with bronze or stone tools. About 1200 people
lived in this area. The Incas used advanced terracing and irrigation methods to grow their crops, mostly
potatoes and maize.
