Petra is an ancient rock city located in Jordan. Petra was an important trade center in
400 B.C to the early 200's A.D. Petra Jordan is also known as the "rose-red" city because
a group of Arab people known as the Nabataeans built their homes, tmples, and tombs in
the surrounding cliiffs made of red sandstone. Petra was located on a trade route that
connected Mediterranean with an area known then as Arabia. After 235 A.D Petra became
more of a religious center instead of a trading center. In the years that followed, Petra
became a home both Christians and Muslims. Sometime after the 1100's, the site was
abandoned for centuries, until it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812.
