Mt. Vesuvius
Mt. Vesuvius is a natural wonder. It is a volcano in Europe, located in Italy. It is known for its size, formation and antiquity. It is about 4,200 feet high and 1,000 feet deep. It was formed by nature 300,000 years ago. This volcano is the only active volcano in Europe. This wonder’s eruptions are devastating. The first time Mt. Vesuvius erupted was before 79 A.D and buried the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Mt. Vesuvius is one of the most deadly and dangerous volcanoes in the world. Its last eruption was in 1944.
The Colosseum
The Colosseum is a man-made wonder. It is located in Rome, Italy on the continent of Europe. It is known for its construction and antiquity. It was built between 72 and 80 A.D. by highly skilled craftsmen. The Emperor decided to have the Colosseum built because he saw that his people were bored. It was the largest outdoor theater in Rome. There is a sports arena in the Colosseum. It looks like a football stadium. Fighters called gladiators used the Colosseum to hold their fights. It was also used to hold special celebrations. It could hold 50,000 people and be emptied in three minutes. The Coliseum was badly damaged by fire from lightning and four earthquakes. |
