Foods Of Coney Island


   There are many different foods and restaurants in Coney Island. One of the most popular was Feltmans' owned by Charles Feltman. He used to sell his sausages with a roll from a cart. He sold over 3,684 sausages in one year. He built a hotel, food stands, rides, beer gardens and a restaurant. You could sit down in his restaurant and eat clams, lobster, ears of corn, hot dogs, crabs and beer. Another famous restaurant that is still in Coney Island is Nathans Famous. It was built June 14, 1892 by Nathan Handwerker. People could buy hot dogs for 5 cents. Nathans has been around for many of years.

Taking a Bite into History

In the 19th century, Coney Island had many different types of foods. Some were different than the have foods today. Some of the foods they had in the 19th century, they don't have in Coney Island any more. However, poeple enjoyed eating, when they visited Coney Island.

 

Clams

During the 19th century the clams were the most popular foods at Coney Island. The clams at Coney Island were sold everywhere and many people liked the fact that they were sold very cheap. The high class people went to the Manhattan Beach Hotel. This hotel was mostly filled with high class people. Many of them loved the delicious taste of buttery clams, that could be grilled for them at any time, day and night. Sometimes the clams were used to make clam chowder.

The Hot Dog

The hot dog was part of Coney Island history too! Charles Feltman brought the hot dog to Coney Island in 1874, and it became one of the most epic foods found in Coney Island. It was a Vienna Sausage in a roll called "Coney Island Red Hots", which was only sold for five cents. Even after 42 years, the "hot dog" is one of America's most beloved foods. Families world wide, come and visit Coney Island every year to taste this impecable, mouth-watering treat.
