The Inca were polytheistic and they spoke Quechua, the official language of the Inca Empire. The Inca people believed in many gods. The sun and moon gods lived in the skies and they also believed that many gods lived in places on earth such as mountains, streams, lakes, or rocks. Many holy temples were located in major cities in the Inca Empire. There were also many holy places in forests, rivers, and lakes where they prayed to the gods connected with events that happened there. Gods were kept happy when they received offerings and sacrifices. The most common sacrifices to the gods were llamas. The Incas built most of their temples to the sun god Inti, who was believed to be the protector of the Inca people.
