The fertile fields in the mountain valleys and along the coasts produced a surplus of maize, squashes and beansthat were stored in warehouses for use in times of need. Also, on the high mountain slopes many varieties of potatoes grew in terraced fields and tomatoes and tropical fruits such as watermelons, pears, plums, peppers, avocadoes, and cacao grew in the rainforests. Fishermen from the coasts brought fresh fish to the markets. Hunters killed deer, rabbits, and they kept turkeys and dogs for meat. The Inca grew a lot of food so no one went hungry.
