Pachacuti's Conquests

A full-scale Inca empire came into being when Pachacuti, or Yupanqui, became Sapa Inca in about 1430 AD. Yupanqui, who drove away the Chancas, took the name Pachacuti meant “earth shaker”, or “he who transforms the world” when he became Sapa Inca. Some people like to believe that before the Chanca War, Pachacuti received a powerful vision from the sun god telling him that he would conquer many nations. After receiving this vision and the defeat of the Chancas, he wanted to make this prophecy come true and indeed it did. Under his rule his armies advanced into part of Tahuantinsuyu. They also advanced into Collasuyu in the south, Chinchasuyu in the north, Condesuyu in the west, and Antisuyu in the East. He conquered the area northwest of Cuzco and ventured almost all the way to the Huallaga River, one of the tributaries of the Amazon. Not all of Pachacuti’s conquests resulted in bloodshed.  Before attacking, Pachacuti would send ambassadors to the people he wanted to conquer describing the advantages of becoming part of the Inca Empire.  Because the Incas had gained a terrible reputation as fearsome warriors, many tribes chose to join the Inca empire rather than fight.
