City-States

The city-state was the principle social unit. Some City-states were larger and more powerful than others; there was a lot of fighting between the City-states. Smaller City-states paid tribute to larger more powerful ones. The Ajaw of the smaller city state paid tribute to the Ajaw of the larger city-state

The city was used only for ceremonial and political use, while most commoners lived outside the city and farmed the land.

The city was made of stone and the most important part of the city was the Great Plaza. The Great Plaza was where all the main temples were; also the Ajaw’s palace was in the Great Plaza. The city was only used for political and religious ceremonies.
