A few years later when the empire grew tremendously, human sacrifice had increased to several hundred thousand victims a year. During the opening of a pyramid for the god Huitzilopochtli, there was a line of people two miles long of about 25000 people who would be sacrificed. During this festival the priests dressed in unique masks modeled after animals.
