“Hi, I’m Jess! Six months ago my family and I emmigrated from Ireland to escape from the horrid potato famine. Sadly, father was one of the unfortunate who starved to death during the time that we lived in Ireland. Now it is my four sisters, three brothers, my widowed mother and I living in a small New York City tenement home."

Jess’s mother dropped her off at the orphanage when she gave birth to her fourth son, Gabriel. Raising eight children was very difficult for a single, immigrant mother.
