The Environmentalist Club ![]() Interview Reporter: Wen Lin Xun(Mr. Bernardi is a history teacher in Franklin D. Roosevelt High School. He is also in charge of Environmentalist Club.) R: Mr. Bernardi, do you think our planet is in danger? B: Of course. We can see many bad things happening on earth everyday. We have to protect the earth. R: Our group;s name is "Ecofriends" because we think humans and the environment should be friends. What do you think about the relationship between humans and our environment? B: First of all, I'll say that this relationship is very important. But a lot of people don't see it. Many people think the environment and humans are two separate entities. However, we live in the environment. And I do agree with you that we should be friendlier to our environment. R: Is this the purpose of the Environmentalist Club? Why do you coordinate this club? B: Yes. We just want more young people to think about environment seriously through this club. We want to show to teenagers how simple, easy things can actually contribute to environment. R: What are some eco-friendly activities that the Environmentalist Club has done? B: Actually, we've done a lot of things. Sometimes, we sit down and talk about our environment. But we also take action. For example, we cooperated with the Park Department of New York City to help clean parks. Recently, we are doing battery recycling. Tomorrow is Earth Day. We are going to hold a bake sale including our special green cupcakes. And we are going to donate the money we make to the Worldwide Wildlife Fund. R: On March 28, 2009, people from more than 100 countries turned off lights for an hour. Do you think this action is ecofriendly? B: Yes, of course. And our club propagated this event to let more people know and join this action. R: However, some people do not think that this one hour actually works. What do you think? B: I really support this electricity saving action. I think it is more symbolic. Just as what you mentioned, people all around the world joined this action, so I believe that a lot electricity was saved. But the more important thing is it showed people how easily we can save our planet. R: Do you think global warming is a serious environmental problem? B: Yes, it is. And it is getting worse. R: Then do you think the United States should prevent global warming even though we might have to sacrifice economic profits? B: I don't think so. I mean protecting the environment doesn't have to sacrifice the economy. R: So you think there are not conflicts between environment and economy at all, right? B: I don't think they are opposed. Some people put them on opposit sides because they want to use the economy as the excuse. Protecting the environment does not mean going back to the dinosaurs age. R: Do you think our environment is going to get better? B: I hope so. I think more people realize how important environment to us and try to protect it is. And that is our goal too.
