Jason and the Golden Fleece

By Paul Soulos

You've all probably heard the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. The story is about a man named Jason. Jason has to get the Golden Fleece from Colchis. The story goes that if he gets this fleece he will become the King of Iolcus.

You probably think that the Golden Fleece is just a myth but it really could have happened. Back in the time when Jason had to collect the Golden Fleece, people panned for gold in rivers using sheepskin. Since people panned for gold using sheepskin gold could have gotten stuck in the skin and stayed, making it look like a golden fleece.

Some traveler could have come to Iolcus and told people of golden fleeces. Everyone in Iolcus probably thought that a golden fleece was an item of the gods. If someone could have this Golden Fleece they would have a lot of power and influence. With this power someone could control a huge empire. So obviously someone tried to get the Golden Fleece and that person was Pelias. Now Pelias had overthrown Jason's father, who was the King of Iolcus. Pelias told Jason that if he could retrieve the Golden Fleece and return with it, he would take the throne as its rightful heir. He said this assuming either the monsters would kill him, he would steal it or between getting there, back and an angry king somewhere along the line Jason would die or become discouraged. During his journey, Jason ran into many evil creatures and fell in love with a princess. The monsters are obviously the myth in this story. To find out the whole story click HERE
