Three Chinese
Holidays |
There are three main holidays in China according to the lunar calendar, which is said to have come into existence for several thousand years and is still in common use today.
The New Year Festival (Spring Festival)
This holiday falls on the
first day of the first lunar month. It is the most important festival in China,
usually celebrated with great pomp, feasting and merry making. On New Year
Festival Eve, all family members are together to have a big feast. Northern
families always make dumplings together to celebrate this holiday.
The Grave Sweeping Day (Qing Ming)
This holiday falls on the beginning
of the 3rd Lunar month. On this day, Chinese people visit the graves of their
dead family members to pay respect.
The Moon-Cake Festival (Mid-autumn Festival)
This holiday falls on the 15th day
of the 8th Lunar month. On the night of this day, Chinese people eat a special
kind of pastry called moon-cakes and enjoy looking at the full moon, which
is particularly clear and bright at the time of the year. That is because
Chinese people take the full moon as the symbol of the reunion of the whole
family.
