Memoirs Family Photo Project
begins at John F. Kennedy High School
March 1, 2004

Susan Farley presented some of her photographs published in magazines and explained the difference
between posed portraits and those which are spontaneous

Students eagerly gathered around the computer to see the results of the first photo assignment created by Blanca Roque who photographed her boyfriend on the bus.

Discussed in class on Friday, March 5

1- Difference between a “point and shoot” snapshot—requiring no thought or effort and a photograph where we think of lighting, composition, mood and content.

2- Even when you think you have done the best try to add one more element of change your point of view and perhaps you can better your “best”

3- Discussion of how Susan Farley got into photography—taking a small amount of experience in High School and using it years later in college to develop a career.—If you want to succeed in anything –you Must pay dues –but the trip along the way should be enjoyable-Photojournalism is not the highest paying profession but constantly puts you into new and interesting situations.

4- Without passion nothing is accomplished. To this day I try to never stop working on a photo assignment until my instincts say “It Works”.

5- Photography is Visual storytelling –Written prose and poems –is also visual “Create a picture with your words-tell it so we can “See” more than we are getting with the Visual photo-Let the two work together.

6- When writing your memoir prose or poem Do at least three drafts—The first on is for your eyes only –don’t worry about spelling, grammar or being “RIGHT” – just express on paper the feeling evoked by the subject. It can be a story of a memory with the subject, and event with the subject or a heartfelt description of the kind of person the subject is. Read over the second draft and then put it aside for several hours-go back and rewrite—this time for someone to read-then when finished have one or more people read it and get their opinion. Ask the readers- What did you like best? What did you like least? Just listen –and use only the comments you feel will help to make your piece better for YOU.—

7-One moiré new one-DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS-details is what makes a person different –Physical, emotional attitude actions.
