by Jeffrey Aikens They say the eyes are the window to the soul, Dark passion mixed with lust can cloud one's heart, Anger fused with ignorance can darken one's mind, So a person with eyes black as night is hard to receive. If you looked into my eyes you wouldn't see my soul, My spirit is forever present, Traces of human thought sparked this evolution in me, Though the days of now did not reflect the days of the past, Adolescent years engulfed in social problems pierced my thin skin, An outer look would determine my actions unwarranted and dicey, But self reflection launched my mind, body and soul forward, Creating a shield of defense where pettiness dear not tread. You may call me a loser or a loner, Words that hold no weight with me, My future is bright and ever growing, I possess something most people don't have, Peace of mind.

By Jeffrey Aikens I am a man, who sees the rhythm and experiences the happiness and sorrow of life, With no limit to the imagination and the endless search for literature and art. I am a man who believes in a higher being and prays to the sky and heaven above, For guidance with no remorse for greed, gluttony, envy and sloth. I am a man, who desires fame and wealth, But not at the cost of a friend or a loved one, For every earning a tithe should be paid for blessing given or the ones already gave. I come from a place where struggle is as normal as breathing, And the people are plagued by violence and despair. I come from a long line of proud black African Americans and Native Americans, Who worked hard for what they earned. I come from a family who believes in taking chances and striving for your goals. I have learned with freedom of expression, Whether in my music or writing, I have a voice. I have learned that what is wrong is not far from what is right, So to do the right thing, it may not make your life easier, But in the long run it will make a big difference. I have learned that at some point in life you have to choose your own path, A decision made alone but you can't lose focus of your goals, Because at the end of the day you have no one to blame but yourself. |

By Jeffrey Aikens It took a long time to embrace wisdom, Clouds of smoke distorted my vision, Like an illusion of a society that separates state and hate from another line of religion. Witness another time division, Where the government and hypocrisy don't form a collision, And a youth's mind is not poisoned by drugs and alcohol which reflect future decisions. In this world lost souls are screaming because their fighting their inner demons, You would hate to see a child's innocence get buried in the cement, Children raising children and trust me I've seen it, I love my family and wish my enemies well because I could say it and mean it. A weary mind from loneliness can put a person out of rhythm, Even though I get lost at times my family knows my heart is with them. For friends and family that is gone I want them to know I still miss them, Thank you to whoever believed in me because I won't waste my life by being thrown in the system. |
