Floyd Bennett Field was New York City's first
airport. It is in the southern part of Brooklyn between Flatbush Avenue
and Jamaica Bay. It was completed in 1930. It had two perpendicular
ways. The airport had underground tunnels from the basement to the ramp
area. There were different shops in the airport too. A barbershop,
weather room, pilot's lounge, passenger lounge, and restaurant.
When the Floyd Bennett airport was
first built, two towers had 5,000,000 candle power. The towers weren't
the twin towers. They were two different towers. They had candles not
electricity.
This whole story is about Floyd Bennett and his airport. Now
that you know about it you could visit the old airport, now an historic site.
You won't be able to eat at the restaurant or get a hair cut though.
You could however ask someone who works there to tell you about Floyd Bennett. Floyd
Bennett field is now called Ryan Vistor Center.
