Mexico City is the capital of Mexico. It is located in the center of Mexico, about halfway between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. According to legend it was originally founded in AD1325 and was called Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Indian empire in the 1400s. The Teotihuacans, Toltecs, Aztecs were the original inhabitants of this great city. In the mid 1500s the Spanish conquistador, Cortes destroyed the city and rebuilt it, renaming it Mexico City.

Today Mexico City is a largely populated city, with more than 20 million people living there, making it one of the largest cities in the world. It is an important part of Mexican people’s lives, being the center of business, higher education, industry, culture, and transportation. Unfortunately the many types of transportation and factories that resulted from many people moving there are the reasons why Mexico City has such high air pollution. The towering Monument to Independence is one of the many landmarks found in Mexico City, that honors those who fought for independence.

Many of the country's artists and writers live in Mexico City.  The Palacio de la Bellas Artes has many cultural activities.  The Ballet Folklorio performs traditional dances there with beautiful, colorful costumes.

There are also many museums in Mexico City.  The museums are: The National Museum of Anthropology, The Museum of Modern Art, The Tamayo Museum of Contemporary International Art, and the Museum of the City of Mexico.
