Creation Myth

In the beginning, there were two gods, the first, being Tepeu the Maker, and Gucumatz the Feathered Spirit. Before the world was made, only they could be seen, glittering with green and blue feathers. Whatever they thought came into the vast empty space. When they thought of “Earth” out popped mountains, valleys, trees, and water. All the things that they thought appeared shortly after they thought them. Soon after they created the earth, they decide to make beings to look after it.

Tepeu and Gucumatz wanted beings to praise them, so they made animals. When Tepeu and Gucumatz told the animals to praise them, they could not speak they could only howl and roar. So Tepeu and Gucumatz decided to make better beings.

The creators created a being made out of wet clay. The creators told them to speak, but they crumbled soon after.

The next race of men was made out of wood, they were very strong but their minds were empty, and they had no hearts.

The two gods that ruled the earth created a new type of mankind after their first attempt to create mankind failed. They created people that listened to them and did what they told them to do. But these people could see beyond mountains, and could see for miles and miles. The gods were unhappy with them because they could see farther than them. So they got rid of them and created a new kind of mankind.

Then, the creators of the world looked at each other. They thought that the people should not be equal to them, so they removed some of their vision. Now the people could only see the things they should, and their understanding of the world weakened. Yet, they still worshiped Tepeu and Gucumatz and started living on the new land.

After this the Mayan Gods had created perfect humans and they lived on like that until the end of their time.
