Famous Spanish Dancers

 

 Jose’ Greco – Greco was born in Molise, Italy on December 23, 1918. He raised up in Brooklyn, New York. He never thought to be a dancer when he was younger. He first studied painting as a carrier. He began to study dance as a young teen and soon became completely involved in the studies and performance of Spanish dance. His unique talents attracted the attention of the famous Spanish dancer Argentinta, who engaged him as her partner despite his age. He was a professor of Dance at Franklin and Marshall College. In 1962, he was knighted by the Spanish government. He was awarded the Cross of the Knight of Civil Merit in recognition of his worldwide contribution to the culture and performing arts of Spain. He received four honorary doctorates as well as the Silver Bowl Award from the American Platform Association for his “brilliant contribution in establishing lasting cultural ties in the Western Hemisphere through Hispanic Dance. The Jose’ Greco Foundation for  Hispanic Dance was founded in 1972 to continue the work begun by him 30 years earlier- bring the beauty and diversity of Spanish dance to as wide and diverse an audience as possible. Jose’ Greco passed away on December 31, 2000 at his home in Lancaster of heart failure at the age of 82.

Marie Camargo- Born in Brussels, Belgium, of Spanish descent. Ballerina credited with the 90-degree turnout and entrechat-quatre. Her innovations included shortening her costume so that her unusually difficult footwork could be seen by the audience. She also expanded her technique by removing the heels of her slippers. She wore long, close-fitting undergarments that became the basic ballet tights. Very popular, she had many gourmet dishes named for her by the chef Escoffier. She was mainly associated with the Paris Opera.

Jose Limon - Born in Culiacan, Mexico. Choreographer considered one of the greatest of modern dancers. He performed with the Humphrey/Weidman Group in New York City and formed his own company with Doris Humphrey as artistic director in 1945.
