Twins Statistics

Twin Statistics for the year 2000 in the United States:

11,896 Twin Births

6,742 Triplet Births

506 Quadruplet Births

77 Quint Births

Since 1980, there has been a 75% increase in the number of twins born.

There are approximately four million births in the United States each year and about 120,000 are either twins or higher multiple births like triplets, quads, etc.

Statistics have shown that older mothers are more likely to have twins especially if twins run in the family. Mothers who have trouble getting pregnant and take drugs to help them have a greater percentage of having multiple babies.

Your race is also a factor. More African-American mothers give birth to more than one baby. Asians and Hispanics have the fewest twins.

There is a greater chance of having fraternal twins over identical twins.

The chance of having conjoined twins is about 1 in 65,000.
The chance of having three babies is 1 in 8,100.
The chance of having four babies is 1 in 729,000.
The chance of having five babies is 1 in 55,000,000.
Note: Mothers taking drugs to help them have a baby have a greater percentage. The above statistics are for natural births.
