Presenting Both Sides of Hunting
Pro - Hunting:
Hunting is necessary in order to maintain and control the population of the many animals in the world. The self regulation system, in which animals maintain their population through the means of food shortages and survival of the fittest, is some what inhumane. The only means to help regulate the animal population is through hunting, which is a more humane way of maintaining a balanced population of wildlife. The hunting of animals keeps the contamination of diseases from animals to humans. Such diseases are rabies and certain types of tapeworms.
Hunting is also humane. Without hunters, who would relieve the animals that are injured and sickly from having to live in such a state? As quoted by the National Rifle Association of America, “well-regulated hunting is a beneficial use of renewable wildlife resources which, when left to nature, are finally lost to predators, disease, often starvation and old age.” There is nothing morally wrong with hunting, as it is the same as killing an animal in a slaughter house.
Hunting organizations are involved with funding conservations. Conservations are brought by many organizations in order to preserve what little natural sanctuaries that are left for the animals. Many natural habitats are slowly recovering due to the roles that hunters play. They also contribute about 75% of the annual revenue for all the States’ conservation agencies. Hunting also contributes to society by teaching people about gun safety and control. In mostly rural areas, where hunting is most common, crime and murder rates due to guns and other fire arms are lower then that of the rates within cities and densely populated areas, where hunting is uncommon or rare.
Hunters are also responsible from bringing endangered or low populated species back into their normal numbers. Some hunter owned conservations promote a winter feeding programs. Winter is natures way of curbing the population and through this feeding program, endangered species may be able to make a come back.
Anti - Hunting:
Hunters kill animals not to control the population animals, but for their personal amusement and self gain. Hunting of animals has led to the extinction and endangerment of the many animal species that inhabit this world. Estimates of 200 million animals are killed each year by hunters. The sport of hunting is in its nature wrong. The weapons used by hunters are cruel to the extreme, in which the weapons used by a hunter would either kill or maim their target for life. A hunter using an automatic weapon has the probability of 100% in killing their prey. The use of a bow is however more cruel then the use of any automatic weapon, where upon, when hunters use a bow, when the target is not killed, their chances of surviving with the wound is miniscule if not any at all. And if the animal were to survive, they would be forever maimed by the injury, leaving other predators to kill it off.
Stress that is induced by hunting causes animals to feed irregularly and prevents the hunted animal from properly storing fat within their bodies so that they can sleep through the winter. Hunting disturbs migration patterns as well. It is also a proven fact that hunting actually causes overpopulation of the animals being hunted. This is contradicting the true nature of hunting, which is to control and maintain the animal population. . In the deer population, stress induced by hunting may cause deer to have twins and triplets, which contributes to its overpopulation as well. Deer reproduction rates also increase because of the abundant space and food left behind from those that are killed by hunters. This growth of deer and other herbivores may have a very negative outcome on the ecosystem, since these animals may crowd out those that are smaller and reduces the diversity of with in the ecosystem. Hunters also contribute to the overpopulating of wildlife through the killing of the species predators.
Hunting also damages the species gene pool. Hunters most often go hunt the strongest, members of the herd, which are almost always male. They choose to kill the animals that are stronger of the species. This contradicts the nature of predation, in which the predator seeks out the weakest of the species. The strongest genetic contributors are then picked off and removed, which hampers the genetic growth of the species.
