HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome/acquired immune deficiency syndrome also known as AIDS is a series of symptoms that is caught if a person is infected with HIV. AIDS leaves people vulnerable to a series of infections and tumors. There are treatments for the diseases that slow it down, but there is no known cure. HIV is believed to have originated from Africa during the 20th century. It is believed that the virus originated form chimpanzees. AIDS has hit Africa the hardest and it has most of the people who are living with. It is now known as a pandemic with over 40 million people infected with the virus and over 25 million victims since it was first recognized on December 1, 1981. Zimbabwe is one of the countries that is on top of the HIV/AIDS infected list.
Zimbabwe is one of the world’s most infected countries. Almost a quarter of the adults living in Zimbabwe are HIV positive; 40 % of people who live in urban areas are HIV positive and 80 % of people in the army are HIV positive. Life expectancy for Zimbabweans is predicted to drop to 35 by the year 2010, in 1997, life expectancy was 66 years. As you can see Zimbabwe took a hard hit on its population, every few minutes more people are dying form AIDS and the death toll had risen.
It is also hard for family members if one of them is infected with HIV/AIDS and has to watch over someone else, they might not have the strength to do so, and sick parents can’t afford to send their children to school. Families that have a member infected with AIDS will end up spending all the saved money the family has to help fight the disease. Health insurance agencies try to give the smallest amount of coverage for the sick and disabled, they recommend taking the test to see if you can get a considerable amount of cover, 80 % of people who what life insurance decide to take the test.
There is also a problem with the work force. In the workplace, things became more costly the workers are absent often and there are more reasons not to train them. If you hire some one that can get ill in a few months, that’s just wasting your money and it can sometimes affect your business. On the countryside there is a fear of the “returnees”. These are the people who move to the towns to find work and return to their home to die because they got infected. In some places land has been set aside for orphans to be taken care of.
