OUR ZIMBABWEN CONNECTION
Welcome to the Bay Academy Helping Zimbabwe Page!
Ours is a school in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, that tries our best to help children in other parts of the world get better educations. Three years ago, we began a program to help the children in Zimbabwe. We had all the students donate an item such as writing materials and reams of paper to the children there. At Bay Academy, we have different majors in addition to our regular academic studies. These are called our talent areas and are drama, music, dance, athletics, creative writing, vocal, science, instrumental, art, media and computer math. Many of the performing talent areas have raised lots of money through their evening performances for parents, relatives and friends. Our school instead of charging a monetary price for admission to these school concerts and plays, has often asked that the admission ticket be to place a item into the large brown donation box before entering the auditorium. This brings in a lot of donations for the children of Zimbabwe. Now, with this web site, the media and math computer students are also doing our share to help the cause. Hopefully, other schools will be inspired to do the same.
Intermediate School 98, Bay Academy, participates in this program in which we send school supplies and books to children in Zimbabwe who really need it. This is shown in the illustration above. The distributor comes to our school in Brooklyn. He picks up the box with all of the donations in it. This includes everything that students, teachers, staff and parents donate to the children of Zimbabwe. Many people donate pencils, pens, markers, rulers, protractors, calculators, paper, notebooks, scissors and books. Mrs. Morse donates plenty of pretty pink scented post-it pads. After all the donations are collected, a person who travels between Zimbabwe and the United States will take the box with all the donations in it and bring it to Zimbabwe. Then he or she will give the box back to the school or schools in Zimbabwe and distribute it to the students there. Since many Bay Academy students and probably many adults in New York do not know where Zimbabwe is on a map, we made a game to show the distributor where to bring the box. We hope you enjoy the game, as well as the informational pages and let us know how you compare it to others by taking our poll.
