Fifth Avenue is one of the most prestigious thoroughfares in New York City. There is incredible shopping, gorgeous architecture, and an amazing view of Central Park. Only the most elite live on Fifth Avenue. The multiple parades throughout the year make it an ideal place to visit. Versace, Gucci, and Fendi shops can all be found on Fifth Avenue. Amazing buildings such as the New York Public Library, the Empire State Building and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are all located on Fifth Avenue. A visitor walking down Fifth Avenue may feel as though they are particitpating in a scene from a classic movie.
In the 19 th century the area that included Fifth Avenue was referred to as Petersville. This area was mostly residential housing until the turn of the 20 th century. The houses were designed with magnificent detail and overlooked Central Park. Fifth Avenue also divides the East and West sides of Manhattan and runs straight to Central Park. It is also the starting point for addresses and is a one way street going southbound. This thoroughfare extends from the north side of Washington Square Park, through Greenwich Village, Midtown and the Upper East Side. Driving down this thoroughfare the lights and sounds of the cars zooming by make it chaotic and thrilling at the same time. Fifth Avenue has always been a symbol of wealthy New York and it is likely to stay that way.
Fifth Avenue is the only spot in the U.S. where you can find an array of the most amazing high end shopping. On the thoroughfare some of the exclusive stores include Luis Vuitton, Gucci, Kenneth Cole, Prada, Tiffany & Co. and Versace. As you step into these stores you are knocked off your feet by the sumptuous scents of floral perfumes. The shopping on Fifth Avenue has been compared to London 's Oxford Street and the Champs Elysees in Paris.
Sharing space with these high priced stores are some honorable and historic buildings. These include the NBC Studio, the Empire State Building, the International Toy Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral. One stretch of the Avenue is nicknamed “Museum Mile” for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Jewish Museum and more. In these museums our heritage comes to life. On Fifth Avenue between 58 th and 59th Streets is the famous FAO Schwartz. It is the ultimate toy store, and every child's dream. Just down the road is the Apple Computer store. Anything you want to experience seems to be available on Fifth Avenue.
Fifth Avenue is also the host to many parades throughout the year. The Saint Patrick's Day Parade is held every year down Fifth Avenue. Most people's faces are painted white and green as they cheer for the entertainers. The Easter Parade also takes place on Fifth Avenue. It goes from 49 th to 57 th Street. Only New Yorkers can do Easter like this with dozens of different animals and the fashion beyond belief. Fifth Avenue also hosts the National Puerto Rican Day Parade and the Gay Pride Parade. Life always seems to be a party on Fifth Avenue.
Fifth Avenue appears to be a dream street. From the notable shops to the sophisticated museums, Fifth Avenue has it all. There is not a thing to dislike about it. The view of Central Park is breathtaking and there is nothing like a stroll through the park. You can't say that you've seen all of New York until you have visited Fifth Avenue. It is the heart of all shopping and art in New York City.
