Giant pandas live in Central and Western China in Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan. Pandas live in mountain ranges that are 3,000 to 10,5000 feet in altitude that contain bamboo forests that are cool, wet and cloudy. Bamboo forests are rocky and contain baboons, bamboo trees and lots of leaves. Since people, farming, and land development have taken over a lot of their habitat, there are only a few mountain ranges left that contain pandas. They now live in a few broken ranges in groups that keep them separate from each other.
Giant pandas travel twice a year. They travel up the mountains in the summer to get cool. When there is snow on the ground, in the winter, they travel down the mountain. There is still snow on the ground, but it is warmer and they can find food.
Giant pandas live in a den. The den is made with grass, leaves, twigs, and rocks. It is a hollow space that looks like a cave. Their dens are used for sleeping at night. In the morning or afternoon they sleep anywhere they can find, space in logs or in trees.
Giant pandas have their own territory. They do not always return to the same place, but each panda stay in its own home area. *
