Cars of the 1950's

Cars in the fifties, they had so many features. They have been known for the fins on the back, brawn under the hood and the basic 'coolness' of the car itself.  Back in the 1950's a new car averaged about thousand dollars to purchase one new.  Today that would only pay for insurance.  Today, you would need about fifteen to twenty times that amount.

Just like today, cars were used for simply enjoying life.  Cruising around with friends, picking up that special gal for a date or simply going to a drive in.  Don't forget about doing to the roller diner.  You couldn't forget to stop there.

However, not all cars were for the young.  Soon came the 'family' car. A station wagon was the family car. A station wagon, or just “wagon,” has a body like a Sedan, but it had an extended rear.  This was used for storage.  Sales of the  station wagon were still strong until 1984 until Chryslers came out with the minivan.

If you had a license in the fifties, and wanted to buy car, you wanted a car that looked and sounded tough. You wanted a car like the 1955 Ford Thunderbird. This car was amazing.  It not only looked good but it has a V8 engine.  What's that song...  "and we had fun fun fun till daddy took the t-bird away."

If that wasn't your kind of car you may have liked the 1954 Corvette E54. This car was available in a few colors.  The Corvette was named E standing for the Corvette model and 54 as in the year, 1954.

If you were into more stylish and luxurious cars, then you should look at a 1958 Bentley S1. This car had luggage storage, factory air conditioning, steel sunshine roof, with  tools and manuals.

No matter what decade you are in, cars were the center of a youngsters life.  Today we just have more options and features of the 50's.
