Disney
Land
Walt Disney was a driven
ambitious man.
When he realized that his company was reaching new heights he decides to expand
his horizons. He decided to create a place where families can have fun together.
He decided to open up a family oriented amusement park that he called a
"magical park". His original plans called for an 8 acre area in
California but due to World War II his plans were halted. During this time, he
then realized that 8 acres was not enough. He soon found a 100 acre area in Anaheim, California. This is were he realized that he will create a "magic
kingdom" called Disney Land.
Construction for Disney Land began on July
21, 1954. This began after months and months of trying to get this grand project
started. Walt once said "I could never convince the financiers that Disney
Land was feasible, because dreams offer too little collateral." Walt
Disney used television to get investors. He wanted to show America what would be
coming. Once they broke ground to build Disney Land Walt Disney's life would
never be the same.
Disney Land amusement park opened in July
1955. When it first opened it had 18 attractions. Some of them are still
operating today. The admission cost was $1. To see the attractions, the
cost was between $.10 - $.35. On the opening day it was over crowded. Some
people forged tickets. An estimated 28,000 people were suppose to come but
because of the forging over ten thousand people came. That opening day was very
hectic. Things did not go according to Walt's plan. The Sleeping Beauty Castle was
left opened and many people were found in restricted areas. Some rides broke
down after a few times they ran. The temperature was very high that day which
made all foods and beverages sell out quickly.
Disney Land took one year
and 17.5 million dollars to build it. It was very popular when it opened and it
is still very popular today. Walt Disney's amusement park are world
renowned. It is
exciting for parents as well as children and there are Disney theme parks
all over the world.
