You may think that the 1950's are nothing like today when in all actuality the decades are very similar. The weird slang, music parents hated, and fashion no one seemed to understand. They had shows like American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show, which is similar to our MTV.  and VH1.  Many teenage girls swooned over Elvis.  He made a fashion statement with the plaid blazer and those black pants that made it easy to shake those hips!

Teens had their own language "daddy-o". They had their own fashions, their own hang outs and drove their parents crazy.  Just like we do today.  Speaking of fashion, if you wanted to go to the diner to get some "grub", you would probably be wearing bobby sox, saddle shoes, and a poodle skirt with a pink sweater set,  while your date had on jeans and a white t-shirt.  If you don't get the "whole enchilada" about the whole pink and gray thing, don't worry we will explain it all. (FYI - the popular phrase “the whole enchilada” also came from the fifties.)

Cars were also a very important ting of the 1950's.  They were needed to go to the drive-in's, the local drive up diner and just to 'cruise' around town.  The boy styles of the cars can still be seen today.  You can't miss them.  They were the only cars with tail fins.

There were many big moments of the 1950's. Disneyland opened in 1953. Elvis appeared in his first motion picture, Love Me Tender, in the year of 1957. You may think that the 1950's are nothing like today. When you think about it, each generation has their own type of music, crazy trends, cool hangouts, and celebrities that people adored. I guess that times, like people have similarities and differences. Maybe you can ask your parents what crazy fads they followed, what kind of music they danced to, and ultimately what their parents thought of it all. So when they say that your parents and grandparents were kids once -you can believe them.
