Here in the United States we are lucky that once-deadly diseases have been greatly reduced or eliminated because of modern chemistry, medical science and widespread vaccination

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other health experts, America's children are healthier today than ever before. Within the past 100 years, life expectancy has nearly doubled and continues to rise. Today's newborns are expected to live until their 80s.  Many people born in the early 1900s died before reaching the age of five.

The food area is a prime example of where improvements have been made.  Many scientific measures have been taken to increase and protect our food supply. One example is pasteurization. Pasteurized milk was a major development of the last century. Pasteurized milk was named after Louis Pasteur, the French chemist who developed the process for killing bacteria causing disease in milk and other liquids.

Among the problems that are on the rise here in America are obesity, anorexia, bulemia, heart disease and diabetes.
