Implementation of the Action Plan
1. Contact the government officials:
Joseph Bruno, the commissioner of OEM;
the correspondent of Ready New York;
volunteers from CERT;
Mayor Bloomberg
- all of whom have the power to help enforce our proposed policy of educating New Yorkers about evacuation procedures.
2. Be persistent and keep calling them until you receive a reply. Explain the flaws in the old action plan known as Ready New York. It is important to get these officials to take us seriously and really listen to what we have to say.
3. Present the officials with graphs and statistics indicating how New Yorkers have no knowledge of the contents of an emergency supply kit or a go-bag and are unaware of the proper and securest evacuation procedures, and policies regarding emergency evacuation.
4. Explain how one article indicated that New York failed to meet evacuation standards. Received a “F.”
5. Begin to explain our proposed policy, mentioning all of the advantages and improvements in the new one. Mention that the Ready New York’s tactics are inefficient and that many New Yorkers have never even heard of such an action plan.
6. Explain how Ready New York needs to be more active in the every community and be more assertive. Ready New York should mail out pamphlets to all residents and make their Community Emergency Response Team more accessible and available. There should be ads emphasizing this problem, speakers addressing this issue, and updates on their websites.
7. Explain that the welfare and safety of New Yorkers rest in their hands. They should take action and be more assertive. Their reputation or public image can be improved.
