We found that there is history all around us. Come learn about whom Giovanni Da Verrazano was. Or why New York City is called the Big Apple! Maybe all your wondering will finally be over and maybe all your questions will finally be answered. Why the Big Apple? The Big Apple is another name for New York City. The Big Apple got it's name in the 1920's. Some people who played in jazz bands called New York city the Big Apple.This is way the way of saying "we did well". In 1971, a guy named Charles Gillet held a campaign to get people to visit New York City. He made ads and in those ads he called New York City the Big Apple. Since then, New York City has been known as the Big Apple.
