Behavior for Personal Security
Few would argue that antivirus, antispyware, and firewall are not effective and necessary means of preserving your personal security. At the same time, no protection is going to guarantee your security if you engage in online behavior that compromises the safety of your computer.
Therefore, it is strongly adviseable that computer users avoid sites that could potentially harm their computers. A number of common risks include:
- No Firewall - While this issue is addressed in full here, it is important to note that a proper firewall is very important to keep your computer safe.
- P2P Software - Peer-to-Peer software includes such applications as Limewire, Kazaa, and uTorrent. These programs are bad for a number of reasons. First, they are usually used for illegal purposes. Beyond personal security, these programs can get you into trouble if you pirate music or software. Second, many of these programs are bundled with spyware. Kazaa had devastating effects on many users, as it was bundled with Spyware and Adware that crippled the computers of many. More surprisingly, a CNET article from 2005 revealed that BitTorrent, which had been considered a "clean" program, also contained hidden spyware. Thirdly, anyone can post any file they wish with P2P programs. Most downloads that claim to be installers for coveted programs are actually viruses, worms, and trojans.
- High Risk Sites - Certain types of sites are statistically more likely to install adware and spyware onto one's computer. Such categories that are of a higher risk include game downloads (which rely on the user's impulsiveness or lack of virus awareness), music lyrics sites (some of which install tracking cookies), and cracks or keygen downloads (illegal means of using software you did not purchase), which are not only illegal, but also filled with malware.
- Attachments and E-mail - If you do not know who sent you an e-mail, or a file looks suspicious, do not download it. Many antivirus programs will scan your e-mails for malware, but it is important to remain alert to suspicious files or e-mails.
By practicing safe online behavior, you decrease your chances of encountering malware and damaging your computer or your privacy.
