Uploading is the process of transferring a web site (a group of files) from one computer (your computer) to your account on the TQNYC server.
Upload Early and Often
We recommend uploading as early as possible. You do not have to upload everything but you want to test a couple pages and see if they work as you expect from the server as they do on your local machine. This is often the only way to find bugs in your site. You can always delete anything you upload or add new content at any point prior to the uploading deadline.
What do I use to upload my site?
There are a couple options to accomplish this.
- The TQNYC FileManager is a series of web pages that allow you to upload, delete and manage the files that make up your web site.
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP) requires a piece of software known as a FTP client. There are
many clients for all type of computers. This program will allow for transferring and managing files between
your local computer and your account on the TQNYC server.
The TQNYC FileManager was designed to allow for uploading using nothing more than your web browser.
It lacks some features and ease of use aspects that an FTP client can provide. For example you are limited
to uploading five (5) files at a time. If you have a large site it can become cumbersome. The FileManager
also requires that you delete a file before uploading a new version of it. An FTP client will
simply overwrite the file. This is by design so new web builders have to make conscious decisions to dele
te files.
FTP clients can upload multiple files and folder structures in a single click of the mouse. This can
be a great help if your site is made up of more than 20 files. An FTP client works similar to the way
you manage files on your local computer.
On our software page you will find a list of FTP clients for both Windows
and Mac's.
Test, test, test...
Look at your uploaded pages in different web browsers. Not all web editors create web pages that all browsers can display. You want to aim to create web pages that can be viewed by as many people as possible. This means your pages should work in as many browsers as possible. If you are using Windows you can test with Internet Explorer and Firefox or Opera.
If you are using Mac OS X you should have Safari and an older version of Internet Explorer already installed on your computer. You can also get Firefox for Mac. If you have an older operating system or really want to test evolt.org archives every browser and verion ever released.
If you have access to other kinds of computers try your site in them. If you have a friend with a Mac and you built your site on Windows have them take a look at your site or show it to them and make sure it works.
When things go wrong...
So you are ahead of the game and uploaded your pages and something is not right, what should you do? One place to start is common mistakes. This is a short list of things it seems many teams run into.
The place to really get help when you have exhausted all ideas is the TQNYC HelpDesk. We have seen it all and are happy to help. Be sure to include your team ID and the url (web address) of the page you are having a problem with. Also any extra information you can provide will always help us diagnose and suggest a fix sooner.
