ThinkQuest New York City is a free program where students create educational websites for prizes, recognition, and to be published in the TQNYC Library. Guided by a teacher, students form teams then develop content to create a website designed to teach other students.
TQNYC is a great way for students to get hands-on practice with technology, increase their reading, writing and research skills, all while getting excited about learning.
How Parents Can Get Involved
Research
Good research is the foundation for TQNYC projects. Parents can take students to any of the amazing museums around the city to learn more about their topic. Libraries, universities and other resources can be made accessible if parents are willing to assist in the learning process.
Technology
Parents might be experts in web design, programming, or even have access to more technology than the school. Parents can give tutorials, double-check work, and allow students to use any equipment (like cameras or scanners) that might be helpful to their project.
Polishing
Before the contest deadline, parents can help look at the work and check for spelling and grammatical errors. Also, checking for technological glitches (like broken links and images that don't load) is really helpful. Great sites have missed out on prizes because there were too many small errors on their site. Let your students submit their best possible site!
