Educational Value

30 points - 3 Questions (10 Points Each)
In order to encourage teams to create entries that have significant educational value, the Reviewers will evaluate:

  1. The importance of the educational objectives of the Entry;
  2. The extent to which the Entry meets these educational objectives;
  3. the originality, innovation and artistic presentation of the Entry and its material.

1. Evaluate the importance of the educational objectives of the Entry

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The educational objectives addressed have limited relevance to the age and grade level of the target audience.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

The Entry has some educational value and a set of educational objectives that have relevance to students.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry has strong educational value and a set of educational objectives that students find compelling.

2. Evaluate the extent to which the Entry meets these educational objectives

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The Entry addresses the educational objectives of the Entry in a limited way.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

The Entry does a moderately effective job addressing the educational objectives of the Entry.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry does an excellent job of addressing the educational objectives and effectively engages students in its designed learning activities.

3. Evaluate the originality, innovation and artistic presentation of the Entry's materials.

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The Entry resembles the direct transfer of information from other media (e.g. textbooks, magazines, encyclopedia's or pamphlets) onto the Web.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

The team has taken advantage of the strength and capabilities of the Web to create a new and innovative presentation of information. The design of the presentation is average.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry is original, exemplifies excellent graphic design and is an inventive way to present information on the web as a learning tool. It is exceptionally resourceful and sufficiently engaging, and allows students to learn in a contagious and innovative learning environment.

Content Quality

25 points - Content Quality/2 Questions (12.5 Points Each)
In order to encourage students to create high-quality entries, the Reviewers will evaluate:

  1. The quality of the content of the Entry, including the accuracy and completeness of the information and the expressiveness and clarity in communicating ideas.
  2. The appropriate attribution(s) of the work of others, and a complete bibliography.

1. Evaluate the quality of the contents of the Entry. Is it accurate, complete and have the Entrants communicated clearly and presented the information in an easy to understand format?

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The information in the site contains numerous or basic errors. The text and illustrations do not help a student further understand the Entrants' idea or subject because it is confusing and organized poorly. There are many spelling errors.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

The information is presented in an accurate way and errors are very minor. It is organized in an average manner and the illustrations help students understand the concept better. There are very few spelling errors.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The information is presented in a clear way and team members have reported their topic thoroughly and in a clear manner through pictures and words. There are no spelling errors.

2. Have the students provided appropriate and complete attributions for work done by others?

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

There is no bibliography, permissions or resource list and no credits are given for where the team got their information. Citations are consistently missing and it is hard to determine where the Entrants got their information, words, music, or pictures.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

The Entrants have specified where they got most of the information they used, but there is some missing information on where they got permission for the pictures, words, and music. However the Entry appears to be intellectually honest.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

Credits are listed clearly and consistently reflect all work contributed by others. All the resources used in the Entry, including pictures, words and music are credited to the proper owners/creators.

Technical Quality

25 points - Technical Quality/2 Questions (12.5 Points Each)
The technical quality of the Entry, including its reliability, ease-of-use, internal consistency, and its ability to perform quality checks on data submitted, and to work efficiently as the increasing numbers of students and schools use the Entry.

1. Evaluate the technical quality of the Entry. Does it work and is it able to perform accordingly.

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The links fail and connections do not work. Multimedia areas of the site do not work and my computer crashes often.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

Visitors can navigate easily throughout the Entry but not all pages work. Some links are broken and fail, but the multimedia areas of the site work well.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry is easy to navigate and all pages work. It generates no errors and all multimedia connections work. My computer does not crash.

2. Evaluate how easy the Entry is to use? Is it self-checking and reliable on different platforms while maintaining its efficiency with larger numbers of users?

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

It is easy to "get lost" or go completely off the site. Users can easily lose the main Entry by clicking on areas of the site. The Entry does not work on certain platforms or with more than one browser.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

It's reliable to use but not all pages work with all browsers and platforms. Users can easily navigate and rarely go completely off the site by clicking on different areas throughout the Entry.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry is naturally easy to use and navigate. It performs well on different browsers and platforms at different speeds and will scale well as usage grows.

Internet Style of Learning

20 points - Internet Style of Learning/2 Questions (10 Points Each)
In order to encourage each team to create an Entry which uses computers and the Internet to enhance the users' learning experiences, the Reviewers will evaluate the extent to which an Entry:

  1. Allows for active participation by others;
  2. Encourages others to share data, ideas, and materials that can enrich the overall value of the Entry, and that help to create a "learning community" around the Entry, and
  3. Fosters interactive, participatory, collaborative "Internet Style" of learning that encourages users to explore the Internet's timely resources and to create new relationships that broaden the community in which they live.

1. Evaluate the degree to which the Entry allows for active participation by others.

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The Entry provides limited opportunity for the user to actively participate in the site. It does not exploit the interactive nature of the Internet.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

The Entry provides a moderate opportunity for the user to actively participate in the site. It does not fully exploit the interactive nature of the Internet.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry creatively exploits the interactive nature of the Internet and has accomplished the goal of encouraging others to contribute information to increase the value of the site for all visitors. Users are able to interact and additional visits will provide the user with increasing knowledge and information.

2. The Entry encourages others to share data, ideas, and materials that can enrich the overall value of the Entry, and that help to create a "learning community" around the Entry.

Score in NEEDS IMPROVEMENT range if:

The Entry contains information that is flat or preset; repeat visits to this site will not provide further insight into the topic because there is no opportunity for visitors to add to the enrichment or improvement of the site. The team is the only source of ideas, views and experiences.

Score in FAIR to AVERAGE range if:

There may be a "guest book," "feedback page," or "message board," but users of this site have only a limited opportunity to participate by sharing. It does not fully exploit the interactive nature of the Internet.

Score in GOOD to EXCELLENT range if:

The Entry creatively exploits the interactive nature of the Internet and has accomplished the goal of encouraging others to contribute information to increase the value of the site for all visitors. Additional visits will provide the user with increasing knowledge and information.
